Artists of the Pre-Raphaelite Period

The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood
Britain, 1848 to Late 19th Century

The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was shaped in 1848 by seven artists: Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Michael Rossetti, James Collinson, Frederic George Stephens, John Everett Millais,
William Holman Hunt and Thomas Woolner.
Their objective was to develop a naturalistic style of art and not abiding to the conventional criteria of their formal art studies.
They believed Raphael was the artist with the utmost precision in depicting nature that they chose to follow his works and so becoming known as the Pre-Raphaelite Painters.
Their art is very Romantic and real and usually based around legends of Greek and Arthurian influence.

Edward Robert Hughes{1851-1917 }was an English Painter associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. He was the nephew of Arthur Hughes who was also an artist.
He worked in mediums of Water/ Gouache being very detailed in his observations of nature. He is famous for numerous paintings like the one I have as a banner for my blog “The Princess Out Of School”. Some of the other paintings by him that I simply adore are:

Heart of Snow

Midsummer Eve

Opehlia

Night With Her Train Of Stars

Twilight Fantasy

Valkyries-Vigil

A good source of information on art can be found here.... http://www.artcyclopedia.com/history/pre-raphaelite.html

Arthur Hughes

I could only find this portrait of Edward Robert Hughes’ Uncle Arthur Hughes who was also an artist. He certainly looked the Romantic type and I can only guess that his nephew must have been somewhat like him as well.

if you still want a portrait, I have a copy of a self portrait but he looks surprisingly Bavarian in a jaunty hat - I think that he had a tragic end to his life (1917)

Twilight at Sea

The Twilight Hours like birds flew by,
As lightly and as free;
Ten thousand stars were in the sky,
Ten Thousand on the sea;
For every wave with dimpled face,
That leaped upon the air,
Had caught a star in its embrace,
And held it trembling there.
